Social Phobia
What Is a Social Phobia?
It should be comforting to know that if you are suffering from a social phobia it is a very common condition and is the most commonly occurring anxiety disorder.
It can best be thought of as a case of extreme shyness, although its effects can be far reaching and have a major impact on the quality of a person’s life.
People who suffer with this condition usually suffer from low self- esteem and will try to avoid situations where they fear others may judge them.
The condition is variable, some people are quite comfortable in small social gatherings with friends or families, manage quite well at work and yet will feel uncomfortable with their co-workers in a social situation.
Because people who suffer from this condition see social situations as threatening this can set off the body’s fight or flight mechanism initiating a variety of distressing physical symptoms such as; an increased heart rate, sweaty palms and underarms and a frequent need to visit the loo.
One negative side effect of a social phobia is that it can also lead to an excessive use of alcohol or drugs as a means of gathering up courage to face social situations.
Brief therapy for this condition can be very helpful, giving people the key to unlock the shackles that keep them from enjoying a full and satisfying life.
So if you believe that now is the time to take some positive action and get some caring help just pick up the phone or email for an appointment. |
